What is special about a clear glass aquarium?
The key difference in clear glass as opposed to classic float glass its reduced iron oxide content. This eliminates the slight green tint that is particularly noticeable when looking at the glass edges from above or in thicker panes. Clear glass, often referred to as Optiwhite, is completely colourless. It allows significantly more light to pass through and provides a brilliant, crystal-clear view of aquatic life and plants in their natural colours.
Why do many clear glass aquariums come as open-top tanks?
Clear glass aquariums are often chosen to showcase aesthetically designed aquascapes. Therefore, manufacturers typically refrain from using distracting cross braces, longitudinal braces, and bulky plastic frames. These open-top tanks feature a completely unobstructed top, with edges neatly mitred and bonded using transparent silicone, resulting in an almost invisible finish. This enhances the minimalist design and keeps the focus on the aquascape inside the tank.
Does a clear glass aquarium need special care?
Clear glass is slightly softer than standard float glass due to the modified manufacturing process, so it requires some extra care when cleaning. When using blade or magnetic cleaners, ensure that no grains of aquarium gravel or soil get trapped between the cleaner and the glass, as this can lead to fine scratches. Soft microfibre cloths or specialised cleaning sponges are the best options, as they help maintain a crystal-clear view for many years.
