HEISSNER Filter Sponges & Filter Mats
Filter sponges and filter mats for pond filters
To ensure your existing filtration system continues to operate at peak performance, HEISSNER offers a wide selection of high-quality filter foams and mats. These components can be integrated with complete flexibility into various systems. Depending on the current challenges facing your pond, you can choose between different pore structures: coarse variants trap heavy debris, while finer mats reliably capture even the smallest suspended particles.
These components form the foundation of biological water treatment and ensure consistently stable water parameters. In the first stage, they perform the mechanical pre-filtration of particles; simultaneously, their vast surface area serves as a vital habitat for beneficial nitrifying bacteria. The result of this combined cleaning power is lasting water clarity in your garden pond.

Replacement, cleaning, and compatibility:
To keep your filtration system operating efficiently, regular maintenance of the filter media is essential. Depending on the level of debris, cleaning may be necessary several times per season. Important: Always use pond water for rinsing to ensure that beneficial filter bacteria are not destroyed. A complete replacement is generally advisable every 1–3 years, or sooner if the material shows signs of fatigue or if the flow rate noticeably decreases.
Whether a medium is suitable depends on your specific system:
- Adaptability: Many mats can be cut to size individually, allowing them to fit almost any filter housing.
- Synchronisation: Ensure that the filter media are matched to your filter type (e.g., pressure or gravity filters), the pond size, and the respective pump flow rate.
Functions and varying pore sizes:
By cleverly combining different pore grades, you achieve the best possible filtration effect. Generally, there are three variants to choose from:
- Coarse pores: These serve as pre-filters, catching larger debris such as leaves or algae fragments.
- Medium pores: These all-rounders handle combined mechanical and biological cleaning.
- Fine pores: Ideal for binding the smallest suspended solids and ensuring maximum water clarity.
These media serve two functions: they handle the mechanical filtration of waste while providing the necessary surface area for biological filtration. Here, bacteria break down pollutants, stabilise the ecosystem, and ensure permanently clear water.
